As the Aboriginal Education Teacher (AET) at Ingle Farm Primary School I implement literacy intervention for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) students and lead staff in implementing Aboriginal Perspectives in their planning and programming. As part of my role as AET I:
supported ATSI students with managing their well-being
collated literacy and well-being data
presented Aboriginal Perspectives at staff meeting and pupil free days
developed and maintained a comprehensive website to support staff with teaching and learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and how to embed it into the curriculum https://aboriginalresource.weebly.com/
supported and managed BSSO
worked closely with ACEO to build stronger relationships with families.
As part of my teaching I always incorporate Aboriginal Perspectives into the learning I design. My knowledge in this area continued to grow when writing curriculum units in HASS for South Australian educators.
As part of a team I assisted in developing a whole school action plan to make Aboriginal Perspectives part of the school's culture. Initiatives included:
Peace Lantern Walk- begins with Welcoming Ceremony from local Aboriginal Elder and the lanterns which students design incorporate Aboriginal symbols and messages
Remembrance Day Ceremonies- begins with Smoking Ceremony from local Aboriginal Elder and aspects of the ceremony focus on Aboriginal Anzacs
Each 'house' group named after a significant Peramangk word linked to land: Watta- Land or country, Tarra- land that rises up, Yultiwirra- Stringybark forest and Kakirra- Moon
Reconciliation Week- students work together in their Peramangk groups (R-7) on an aspect of local Aboriginal culture while also attending a workshop with a local Aboriginal Elder
As part of my own teaching I have developed and taught Aboriginal Perspectives with:
