At Bridgewater Primary School I immersed students in the experiences of our Anzacs in World War One. Students were moved by the impact war had on soldiers, their families, their community and the nation. They came to understand that the effects of war are ongoing, and that memorials are as important to the community today, as they were 100 years ago. Motivated by what we learnt; the class decided to raise money to build a new memorial in Bridgewater. The new memorial was opened in 2019, showing the commitment made by students when involved in authentic learning experiences. https://www.bridgewaterwarmemorial.org/
The learning program I developed engaged students deeply and significantly improved their growth in many areas of their learning. The Department for Education documented the process to use as a professional learning resource for South Australian educators.
